RESPONSE TO THE LETTER, FROM THE OFFICE OF COUNCILLOR MALIK, WARD 10: PLEASE CLICK ON THE "READ MORE" --- > Date: Friday, March 3, 2023 at 8:42 PM Subject: Re: Motion to Create a Sub-Committee on Metrolinx Ontario Line Construction Dear Rick and members of the Federation of South Toronto Residents' Associations, I am writing to express my gratitude for your support, advocacy, and activism on the Ontario Line construction project. As you know, at last week’s Toronto and East York Community Council meeting I, along with Councillors Chris Moise and Paula Fletcher, successfully established a new Ontario Line Sub-committee with unanimous support from our Council colleagues. The first meeting will be taking place later this month, Wednesday, March 22nd, beginning at 9:30AM. Information as it becomes available will be found here: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/#/committees/2683/23761 To speak at the meeting, register by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 416-392-7033 This Sub-committee came together in response to concerns from residents and community stakeholders like yourselves who expressed frustration about the lack of public engagement and communication from Metrolinx and the Provincial government on construction, traffic, tree canopy, and business impacts of this important new transit infrastructure. We all want more expansive and improved transit infrastructure. I believe it is possible for Metrolinx to build public transit for all, protect our public and green spaces, and minimize disruptions, by making the choice to work cooperatively with all of us. Your expression of concern sharing the challenges you have already identified in your neighbourhood, your written letter of support, and your dedication to demanding that we can do this together, differently, were instrumental to this process. As work prepares to begin imminently on the new Ontario Line transit project, this Sub-committee will allow the City of Toronto to set clear recommendations to Metrolinx and the Provincial Government on how to build and implement the Ontario Line. Our goal is to ensure the best results are achieved for Toronto residents in terms of design, construction and community benefit. Your time, expression of support, and ongoing local advocacy is appreciated, and has had an impact. It is an honour to serve as your local representative, and I look forward to continuing our work together. Thank you again.
