Re: Toronto Environmental Management - TCAN Report
The Fostra Environment Committee / Working Group is involved with the Toronto Climate Action Network (TCAN), by monitoring the work of more than 50 climate action groups, and reporting on TCAN activities. I attended the TCAN Conference on Climate Action last week, and would like to report on an item, which is relevant to Fostra-AAC.
The point was made that Toronto is a leader among Canadian cities, as far as Climate Action and Environmental Management is concerned. Toronto has developed an impressive plan for reducing carbon pollution to zero. The Toronto Net Zero Plan is being viewed as a model for urban environmental management.
But we were reminded that Net Zero is only a plan. Reaching emission targets will require significant investments and long-term management. For example, in housing, it's easy to achieve climate targets with new building technologies. However, retrofitting old building stock, to save on oil consumption, will be a costly and long-term commitment for cities across the country.
For Net Zero Policies to succeed, a sustained effort will be required on the part of all environmental groups, to keep pressure on Council, and to ensure that the city continues to commit the resources needed, to reduce the city's carbon footprint.
As one panelist said, The Climate Action Agenda has been approved by Council simply because there is so much public support for it. Continuing public support is still required for the long-term success of the Net Zero Plan. FoSTRA can help by continuing to circulate TCAN information and climate action reports to FoSTRA Members, the AAC, and PRG.
